Throughout the centuries, many cultures have been conquered on the island and it is believed that if you look closely enough, you will find relics of each one.

Today, there are four different groups of people living on Norfolk Island: The' indigenous peoples (Melanesians), European settlers, Asian migrants, and Australian Government staff. The indigenous peoples lived in Norfolk Island for thousands of years before European settlement took place in 1788. They traditionally sailed from their home on New Zealand to this island every two years to harvest yams and other foods. The Europeans settled in Australia and came to Norfolk Island between 1788 and 1803, but they had no luck growing crops. Then, they decided to start a penal colony on Norfolk Island.
